Summary/Abstract: The article pays attention to the fact that the research of word building and origin of Lithuanian oikonyms often presents their two possible base or original words, which are usually appellatives and personal names. However, such interpretations are not accurate; therefore, it is attempted to find the ways allowing an accurate determination of the base of word building or origin. The analysis of historical sources is considered the most reliable method: when the data found in them show that a common-root personal name can be found in the same settlement bearing the name of an oikonym or located in the vicinity, the name of that settlement definitely derives from a personal name. By providing the examples of such cases, certain interpretations of the word building and origin of oikonyms made to this day have been corrected.
