Summary/Abstract: The article provides the first discussion concerning the possibilities of the origin of Lithuanian toponyms with the roots juj-/jūj-. In the attempt to determine the origin of the oikonym Jujė́nai, the article undertakes a thorough analysis of the data from the colloquial language and its records in historical documents, i.e. 17th–18th century parish registers of Vabalninkas Church and the sources of administrative type. After collecting a number of historical variants, the reasons of their occurrence are analysed in the study. Arguments as to why the present form can be considered authentic are provided. After the historical personal name *Jujnyčia with the root juj- was identified, the possibility of the oikonym’s anthroponymic origin was put forward. It is asserted that the hydronyms (variants) collected from the colloquial language Jujà, Jùjos liñkis, Jūjà may show the apophony of juj-/jūj-. It is worth considering that the above toponyms can be traced to the personal name *Jujà, *Jūjà
