Summary/Abstract: The article presents the concepts “stupid” and “stupidity” in Romanian mentality. The arguments are illustrated with phraseological units, including proverbs and sayings. Also, the ideas are supported by some archetypes of this conceptual category from other folklore products: fairy tales, anecdotes, stories. It demonstrates the division of this conceptual sphere into two categories, depending on the manifestation of the intensity of this feature: absolute and relative (or, in other terms, monovalent and bivalent). Both categories are developed in phraseology. In order to prove that the area of significance in mentality of the lexeme “stupid” is much more extensive than the area of lexical significance, semantic plethora exclusively phraseological of this phraseological unit component is presented. The conclusions drawn are related to the Romanian people attitude towards this category of people (he is tolerant and finds contextual justification, is not avoided and cohabitation solutions are found)
