Summary/Abstract: The concepts of professional counselling and their interpretation are discussed in the article; the strategy of professional counselling, which was prepared and certified at the end of 2003 is presented. This strategic document is closely related to the project of the white book „life-long learning and continuous vocational training", to the strategy of the schemes of financing vocational training and higher professional studies. Increasingly relating professional counselling to eco-nomical and social policy, to the strategic tendencies of life-long learning, it is necessary to develop this kind of activity in higher schools, to increase the effectiveness of professional counselling services in higher schools. The main principles of professional counselling in higher educational institutions are presented in the article, the possible ways of activities are shaped and the model of professional counselling is presented. To substantiate it, the results of professional counsel-ling research in lithuania are reviewed. The results of the reviewed research proved that higher educational institutions cannot opt out the professional counselling in secondary schools; they must assure self-determination and understanding of their students, participants of workshops that life-long learning is necessary. With the demand of life-long learning, the de-mand of professional counselling increases, which nowadays and in long term perspective tends to be differentiated according to age range and the goals determined by target groups.
