Summary/Abstract: Wilfred Cantwell Smith (1916-2000) was a distinguished Canadian scholar of religion, Islam, philosophy and theology. In 1952 he founded the Institute of Islamic Studies at the McGill University. The Institute quickly won a wide recognition in the academia for its ingenious course of studies and unconventional – for its times – cooperation between representatives of different religious and cultural traditions. Christian, Muslim and other religious scholars today, and their collaboration in the oriental studies, own much to the influence of W.C. Smith and his Institute.
