Summary/Abstract: In Bulgaria the years in the wake of 1989 have been a time of dynamic and radical transformations in all spheres of life. The processes of changes in the realm of work (as a consequence of the development of market economy and of the tie-up of Bulgaria’s economy with that of the EU countries) have had significant subjective dimensions, testifying to the problems of adaptation of the people to the new challenges of work. Ethnological studies of the cultural forms in the realm of work under post-socialism can be a valuable contribution to the analysis of the changes in the everyday culture of the Bulgarian people. The article rests on an empirical study of the holidays in a Bulgarian subsidiary of an international company, which make up an important component of culture in the realm of work. The holidays have been discussed in direct connection with the specific context of the company, in which they are being planned and held. The researchers’ questions have been targeted at elucidating the role of the holidays in the realm of work; the messages, which are being conveyed through them, and the attitude of officials of different tiers to these cultural forms. The analysis of the separate components of the holidays in the company studied, of their character and their importance in the realm of work help reveal their fundamental functions: integrating, identifying, communicative, and legitimizing. Holidays prove to be important mediators in the better adaptation of the Bulgarian co-workers to the work requirements of the foreign company.
