Summary/Abstract: Although the subject stated in the title is an important one, so far it has only been tangentially reflected in historiography. However, apart the administrative, economic or cultural changes which occurred upon Bessarabia’s annexation to the Russian Empire, a series of changes took place concerning the religious composition of the region and even the evolution of the spiritual life of the indigenous Romanian population. Based on a series of historiographical and archive materials, the author means to look into the relations which were created between the natives of the Prut-Dniester area, most of them Orthodox, and the communities which represented minority communions, especially the ones from the Russian imperial space, many of them unknown to the inter-river region until the beginning of the 19th century, as well as of the impact on the Bessarabian population.
