How to write the history of linguistics

Summary/Abstract: The structured movement of meanings is a basic dimension of the history of linguistics. The perspective of personalities, schools and national traditions is more or less a kind of materialization in this context. This way of understanding historiography enables us to explicate overall directions of linguistics – the relationships of main- and side-streams of development, regressions, and periods of emancipation and interdisciplination. It enables us to identify not only cul-de-sac development, but also misunderstood and forgotten lines of development that would only appear to be promising in the future.
