Summary/Abstract: The XIII International Congress of Slavists took place in Ljubljana (Slovenia) from August 15–21, 2003. The program of the congress was so rich that it was impossible for any individual to take part in all sessions, round tables, thematic blocks and presentations of new publications, hence this report is only a small selection from the countless number of lectures and papers. In the linguistic section of the congress, great attention was given to the situation of the Slavic languages in Europe during a time of globalization and integration, language policy, language management, language legislation, the relationship between large and small Slavic languages etc. Many linguists at the congress were interested in the application of new methods (cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics). In the section for literary criticism, cultural studies and folklore, many papers concentrated on regional studies, theme studies and image studies, as well as on postmodernism and fantasy in Slavic literatures, or the relationship between the Internet and works of literature. A theme common to both sections was the representation of gender (in language, literature and culture). A special section was devoted to the anniversary of the birth of Josef Dobrovský.
