Summary/Abstract: There is a vast amount of studies discussing recent financial crisis and its impacts. However, most of them ignore insurance sector concentrating on banking. At the same time most of them take either the global or national approach. Seldom is regional perspective offered. This absence of regional approach is particularly detrimental in relation to the single insurance market of the European Union which has existed for many years. This article attempts to fill the existing gap. It offers an extensive analysis of the impact of the recent financial crisis on the European insurers. It also provides an insight into the special role enjoyed by the state aid in the rescuing and restructuring of the financial industry.
