MTPL Direct Settlement. Experiences of the European coun- tries

Summary/Abstract: MTPL insurance remains the most widespread compulsory insurance in the world for years. Having in mind that there are over 800 millions registered motor vehicles, millions traffic accidents and resulting from them injured and/or damaged parties claims', the mat- ter of effective and prompt claims settlement is one of the key-point issues within this insur- ance class. In some states, especially Europe (for instance France, Belgium, Spain and Greece) direct settlement schemes become the respond to challenges arising from the need to manage large volume of claims. The idea of direct settlement schemes is to allow the injured and/or damaged party of the traffic accident to claim against its own MTPL insurer and not against MTPL insurer of the responsible party. Thanks to it, the injured and/or dam- aged party is handled by its own insurer and the final compensations place between insur- ers concerned.
