Summary/Abstract: Singing associations emerged on the territory of Congress Poland since the onset of the 19th century. Their dynamic development begun, however, only after World War I. In 1922, eminent figures of the Polish singing movement (Piotr Maszyński, Henryk Opieński, Wacław Lachman et al) set up an all-Poland Federation of Polish Singing Unions. Three years later, the Musical and Singing Associations Union of the Kielce Province sprang up. In its peak period, the Union consisted of 51 choirs, open to singing enthusiasts from all backgrounds, mainly workers and craftsmen. Choirs accompanied church celebrations and public holidays, but they also sang for money, and sometimes raised money for charity. Choirs promoted Polish choral music, drawing from works by St. Moniuszko, J. Gall, F. Nowowiejski, St. Niewiadomski, and other composers.
