Summary/Abstract: There is a consensus between member states and European institutions regarding the strategic role of education for the development of societies and economy. In a changing society and global competitive environment, EU important goals – social cohesion, competitiveness, sustained growth – could be achieved only through quality preparation of its citizens in terms of education and training. The analysis shows that although some good results have been provided, the European educational systems still need a lot of improvement. The current article analyses the newest measures proposed by the EU and compares the state of Bulgarian education to the Europe 2020 objectives.
