Summary/Abstract: After the abdication of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the Prince's lieutenant summoned the parliament to decide on bringing to the throne a foreign prince from a European dynasty, the only guarantee of maintaining the Union. After lengthy debates, following the refusal of Count Philippe Flandra, the Romanian politicians stopped their election to Prince Carol of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. The Principal's training, personality, family alliances constituted solid guarantees for the future of the country. After the arrival of the new Lord in the capital and the vote of the new Constitution of 29 June / July 7, 1866, the main objective pursued by the Romanians was to obtain the firm's investment from the Sultan
