Summary/Abstract: The results show that there are two types of duties causing stress to the interviewers: activities that may lead to an interview break-off and activities that cause cognitive difficulties to the interviewers. Methods adopted by the interviewers in dealing with problem respondents seem to be ependent on the type of troublesome situation. In instances when respondents experience difficulty in understanding the questions, most interviewers destandardize the interview protocol and simplify the vocabulary and syntax. Interviewers’ reactions and strategies in other situations (i.e. reluctant, irritated and talkative respondents) are more complicated and are thus determined by many factors.
