Summary/Abstract: There are two main contrary points of view about the relationship between modernization and Islam. The first one claims that Islam possesses potentiality for modernization, the second one insists on it’s doctrinal incompatibility with the goals of modernization. An attempt is made in the article for comparison between the pillars of the Muslim faith and „the pillars“ of modernization. As main „pillars“ of European modernization are considered the moral justification of the goals and means of modernization, secularization, rationalization, individualization. The reasons for setting up barriers against modernization in the Islamic world are Shari a – Islamic theocratic and common law, theocratic authority, rejecting the interest, charity, the peculiarities of the Islamic community, the lack of a tension between faith and reason, as well as the lack of centralized Islamic clergy. All these Islamic doctrine characteristics reproduce traditional society instead of creating modern one.
