Catholicism and “The Spirit of Capitalism”

Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to prove the assertion that, being a traditional religion, Catholicism, much like Judaism and Islam, doctrinally and institutionally aims at the preservation and reproduction of the values of traditional society. That is why it is not in a position to give rise to a phenomenon similar to the Protestant „Spirit of Capitalism“. However, some interpretations of the doctrine and practice of the Catholic Church in its capacity of an institution acting in the real economic world as a real economic subject are directed at cutting down on, and circumventing, the prohibitions to capitalist development which is exactly why it has been possible during the centuries of catholic domination.
