Summary/Abstract: The subject is relevant in aspect of society demand, timeliness and other practical factors of the present paradox situation: in the guidelines of the Lithuanian educational reform (1993), projects of general programmes (1994) many visions of society development are declared although today it is openly spoken about society with “dead moral values”. The aim of the research is to define how textbooks of ethics for forms V–VI correlate with the programmes of general education and suit the criteria of textbook evaluation. It has been identified by the methods of analysis of literature sources, meta-analysis and questionnaire that ethics as a separate subject is one of moral education variants (alternative religion and one of its structural parts (formal-informal, compulsory-integral). Moral education was introduced into teaching programmes after the restoration of Independence, therefore there were no teaching traditions; moral education programmes, which are wider, more detailed than it is common in general programmes, are often corrected. The programme of moral education as a compulsory subject makes the integration (universal) programme more concrete. In the years of independence 3 variants of moral education were prepared on the basis of universal moral programmes. In terms of programme content there are no obvious differences. Three alternative textbooks for forms V–VI were published: 1 original (by V.Vaicekauskienė) and two translated from the German language. All the textbooks partly match the formulation of the general ethics programme, and, of course, correlate with standards. Teachers prefer (if they can choose) the textbook “Ethics. Textbook for form 5/6 (2003). Compiled by F. Burkhrad, P. Krahulec, translated from the German language. Since the year 2007/2008 it will be possible to teach for form V according to an alternative textbook prepared by A. Saulytė and R. Dirginčienė. It is an entire set of teaching means (textbook, exercise book, teacher’s book), however the teachers of the country have not got it until now. The basis of the textbook is a literary tale, theoretical knowledge and tasks are matched to it. Each chapter ends with a generalizing lesson, assigned for knowledge fixation and personal advancement evaluation.
