Summary/Abstract: The article presents the most important issues concerning the natural gas and crude oilproduction and transportation in the post-Soviet countries of Central Asia (WesternTurkestan), that is to say in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, andKyrgyzstan. Since these countries have serious energy resources, they became a point ofattention for Russian and Western energy sector companies and also for China. Due tothe economic growth in China and growing demand for energy, this power proved to bethe most influential player. The paper shows the perspectives of Russian-Chinese rivalryabout energy resources as well as the possibilities of cooperation between Moscow andBeijing. This rivalry has also serious consequences for the European oil market, sincenatural gas and petroleum transportation projects from the Caspian Sea basin to Europeseem to drift away. This strengthens Russian position in the European energy market.
