Summary/Abstract: Apart from the classic, critically-oriented normativist perspective, modern theory of communication faces significant sociocultural changes, which occur as a result of the appearance of new technical performances of modern media. First of all, it is ‘informatization’ of society, which is reflected in the increasing significance of information and communication, which is in turn boosted by frequent innovations in technologies for e-communication. On the other hand, the space of computer-assisted communication has moved the ‘borders’ between the private and the public. By expounding Habermas’s public theory, the author provides a critique of various theoretical orientations which describe the Internet as a ‘democratic public space’.
