Summary/Abstract: The paper overviews the various uses of dialectal stylization involving the Mazovia and Podlasie dialects in Polish films and TV series. The author aims first of all at outlining the scope of research field. Secondly, she determines the issues that are worth to be taken into account in a more detailed analysis of Mazovian and Podlasie dialect stylization as it is employed in films. A preliminary analysis has shown that the Podlasie dialects are most frequently whenever the language of North-Eastern and Central-Eastern Poland is being referred to. The possible reasons for it include the distinctiveness of the Podlasie inhabitants’ language, which enables the film’s action to be precisely located and contributes to the social characteristics of the main characters. Moreover, an important relation has been noticed between the effect of language stylization used in the films and the actors’ socio-geographical origin. It needs to be emphasized though that while film creators appeal to linguistic and extralinguistic stereotypes, they also contribute to the strengthening of stereotypical ideas in popular audience.
