Summary/Abstract: The main question addressed in this paper is whether the goals of the intercultural approach and those of autonomous learning in foreign language classes are compatible or whether they exclude each other. The first part focuses upon the potential discrepancies between the development of autonomy and intercultural teaching while the second is devoted to the similarities between these two approaches. Moreover, using concrete examples, it aims to show how simultaneous development of autonomy and intercultural competence can be achieved in practice in the foreign language classroom.
