German as a “language of contact” in the European Union

Summary/Abstract: The paper concerns the position of German as a “language of contact” in the European Union and discusses the way the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache can contribute to making German this kind of language. After discussing the above, the activities and the approach of the Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache are presented, and typical language-related examples and questions are examined on the basis of a normative view. These examples and questions reflect the tendencies of language development and, simultaneously, they represent the significance of the German language in the European Union.
