Summary/Abstract: The Association for the German Language (Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache or GfdS) constantly comes across newly coined words in the course of its research and language counselling activities. This has given rise to the Words of the Year project, which has been recording contemporary vocabulary for over 40 years now. This article describes the practice of picking the words of the year and presents practical ways of using those words in discussions about German as foreign language as well as in teaching. The collection of words will be connected with discourses and contexts. Also, it will be presented with reference to similar projects in other countries.
