Summary/Abstract: The object of this study is verbal means of expressing grief in modern Russian and accompanying non-verbal signals. The examples for this study are mostly excerpted from the Internet, as well as from oral communication. The following five strategies of expressing grief were distinguished: “I say directly”, “I describe the situation”, “I ask rhetoric questions”, “I shock”, “I keep silent”. Each of them is analysed according to the reason of emotion and the ways to express it. The author is especially interested in the intention of speaker and the context of utterance.
