Summary/Abstract: This study takes a look at the microfoundations project in current management research from the theory building perspective. We aim to answer the substitution of current theory with microfoundamental explanations vs. complementing it with microfoundations. To do so, we first provide a historical perspective on the micro foundations project in economics and sociology. Next, we provide a definition of microfoundations together with an overview of extant applications in latest research. Third, we look at microfoundations of inter organizational collaboration to substantiate that to date, and microfoundations are used here as a complement not a substitute of prior theory.
