Summary/Abstract: The railroad Belgrade‒Bar was the biggest and most expensive infrastructural project in socialistic Yugoslavia. The railroad’s construction lasted 25 years (1951‒1976) during which period Yugoslavia’s political and economic systems underwent multiple major reforms. These reforms influenced the construction of the railroad, particularly in regards to its financing, which had been a central concern from the beginning of the project. As of the end of the 1960s the question of financing the railroad Belgrade‒Bar became a public issue and has been the topic of discussions and disagreements between Yugoslav Republics ever since. The memory of the railroad’s construction as well as conflicts regarding its financing continues to be a subject of contention between the ex-Yugoslav Republics as questions remain unanswered regarding the real cost of construction and who its investors (federal state / republics) were. By examining the history of the railroad and its financing, this paper attempts to shed light on these questions.
