Summary/Abstract: The press within the Eastern Bloc, apart from certain specifications of some countries, stayed true to Lenin’s type of state- controlled press and its character was similar between 1945 and 1989. However, the Yugoslav press already developed in a different direction from 1952 and especially after 1961. The press character changed to such an extent in the process of constant liberalization of the Yugoslav press, so that after 1966 there would be no reason to classify it as state-controlled press anymore. At the same time the character of the Yugoslav press essentially differed from the western free press.
