Summary/Abstract: The underdeveloped societies of Eastern Europe (societies in transition) realize the initial experience of free democratic development after the collapse of communism. Having experienced the tragedy of wars, the former Yugoslav countries, especially Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina but also Serbia, represent the living examples of using the media with evil functions and purposes. However, it should be emphasised that the main actor of evil and aggression was the nationalistic regime of Slobodan Milošević in Serbia and that the media, held under control by Serbia, actuated war. In this regard are particularly interesting experiences and practices of the media during the war and the attempts made to establish freedom to work of the media after the war. Those experiences are important examples of aligning with ethics, now as an element of consciousness but also as a reason for the need of standardization within the public sphere. The events in the former Yugoslavia should be viewed in the context of the dissolution of a political system, but also the system of values, on one hand, and, on the other hand, in terms of trying to nullify certain cultures, that is, to impose a ‘superior’ culture in order to change or destroy entire nations. These experiences are important, especially in the circumstances of spreading the ‘global strategy’ (à la Brzezinski) in the countries of former Yugoslavia, and the attempts to democratize the societies destroyed by the national-fascist Serbian ideology. The context of our analysis, therefore, is a society in the context of war and the work of journalists (the media) as an example of a function of imposing or defending the system of values, the conquest or liberation.
