Summary/Abstract: Contemporary international relations are marked primarily by a process of globalisation whose scope and relevance make its consideration imperative; but at the same time this obscures another important parallel process in the international community - internationalisation. This process is also marked by increased linkage and interdependence driven by the flow of capital, technology, investment, ideas and communication, but what is involved is joint activity by national players, public and private, at a level transcending national frontiers, serving as an addition to the efforts of the state to meet the needs of its citizens, to accomplish the national interest. While globalisation , ... frees alternative centres of power and influence which are outside the control of states and outside international governmental organisations, set up on the basis of treaties concluded by states", internationalisation is an instrument enabling national states to realise their national interests in areas where they are unable to act independently. The most important characteristic of contemporary internationalisation is the creation of regional international organisations in geo-economic regions (examples are NAFTA- North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement, APEC -Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) or in sub-regions (ASEAN -Association of South East Asian Nations, Mercosur- Mercado Comun del Sur and others), which are marked by strong ties between the member countries' national economies - effectively their integration.
