Summary/Abstract: The paper investigates the role and relation between memory and history of state and nation on one hand and supporting the national identity of the Scottish people on the other. Nowadays the issue of national identity is debatable because of the European integration process. Furthermore memory and perception of past has become of interest to political and social scientists, whose area of study involves the multiplicity of national identity. Discussions on national identity and historical memory is a part of a general process of a renaissance of memory and debates on the issue of Scottish independence. Collective memory contributed to the development of the historical approach to Scottish national identity. The impact ole of memory and history of nation is a kind of process of the instrumentalization of the knowledge of history and mythicization of the past that have a great influence on national perception of past. The Scottish people draw heavily on their historical heritage, the role of national identity is deeply correlated to perception of their ‘glorious’ history. Collective memory is perceived as vital to the survival and support of the national spirit. It is important to emphasis that Scots had accepted the presence of culture of British, but have developed ways to protect and celebrate their treasures and national traditions.
