Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with two issues: private health institutions in Bulgaria managed by women doctors in the period of 1909–1946, and the appointment of women doctors in managerial positions in state and municipal health structures (hospitals, sanatoriums and health stations) up to 1944. Emphasis is put on entering the Bulgarian women doctors in private practice, hardly accessible to them in the late 19th and early 20th century, and on their obtaining power positions in the sphere of medical profession, e.g. real power of owners and managers and ‘symbolic power’ of competent specialists, enjoying the confidence of their patients. Based on unused archival sources, the paper examines the development of hospitals run by physicians Nevyana Azmanova-Hancheva, Saba Hadzhiassenova-Kostova and Dona Dragieva (St. Zagora and Sofia), Valentina Tranen (Pleven) Stavrida Yotova (Pazardjik), Vera Shopova (Razgrad), Elena Bozhinova-Konstantinova (Rousse), and Lalka Grozdanova (Sliven).
