Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the concept of polemics as understood by the German thinker Walter Benjamin within his critical understanding of an intellectual and intelligentsia in general. Considered are the changes in the approach to understanding of polemics throughout thinker’s scientific activity. Special attention is paid to Benjamin’s research of the famous Austrian journalist Karl Claus as the intellectual polemist who has become a certain symbol of the intelligentsia of the interwar time.
