Summary/Abstract: The author elaborates on the historical names of colours of cloths and articles of different purpose made of them, found in archival sources. Their meaning and development in the course of time are analysed. The paper was inspired by an urgent need to elucidate the meaning and the proper Lithuanian naming of textile colours which in the GDL documents, due to the specific situation and legislation of the state, were indicated by non-Lithuanian words. These, mostly Polish, names of colours and shades, as well as their variations were selected by the author from several hundreds of various documents dealing exclusively with the textile used in the GDL. The main sources were inventories of people’s wealth, lists of goods, registration books of various weaving workshops, the old catalogues of museum exhibits and various historical publications (travellers’ notes, memoirs, etc.). All names of textile colours and their shades are presented in alphabetical order in a glossary. Each naming found in the sources is supplied with a separate vocable in which the term’s origin and one or more brief citations from the sources and the Lithuanian characterization of the meaning are presented.Historical colours of textile articles have been for the first time attempted to discuss in the historiography of Lithuanian studies of art.The publication might be of value for investigators of artistic textile, restorers, ethnographers and all those interested in the history of this area of applied art.
