Summary/Abstract: The question of national and personal identity is a dominant issue in postmodern literature. Migration, race and the construction of identity are considered in connection with the postcolonial project, where the encounter with the other becomes crucial. Andrea Levyřs novel ŖSmall Islandŗ is an important contribution to the consolidation of the idea that race doesnřt guarantee complete difference, but it is a boundary to be crossed in order to accept differences and to construct hybrid identities, a project in which the exchangeability of roles among characters plays an essential part.
