Summary/Abstract: This paper belongs to a comprehensive research on identifying the documentary dimension of Slavici writings. The author was preoccupied by various aspects of the education in Ardeal. In his studies he sustains that the cultural life has its origin in church and school. The confessional schools were Latin. Slavici underlines their role in preserving the national feeling, reflecting them in literature. He analyses the attitude of people in rural communities concerning school and education: some of them despise books, others feel intimidated by the vision of learning, and another category has a positive attitude regarding education, which is considered a mean of access to the condition of gentleman. The intellectual is respected for his culture by the village people. They think that the intellectual activity is superior and that is why it is important. On the other hand, the intellectual is not respected by the state and has a poor material condition. Slavici highlights the attitude of former school intellectuals regards any change in education. They were reluctant to organizing children in smaller groups or hiring new teachers. Slavici literature presents the modest conditions that a person had to fulfill in order to become a teacher.
