Summary/Abstract: In the paper an attempt is made to cover all the results from ethnographical field researches in several settlements in Lovetch ant Teteven regions. There has been rendered and classified all the evidence available about the traditional house and building dating most part from the XIXth to the beginning of the XXth century. The study examines the relationship between building as a process of construction and spiritual and mental phenomena provided in traditional ideology and system of customs. This method of approach is correct and ondispensable because the traditional house is considered to be closely bound to syncretism to its popular culture. It is to be regarded as a real sign affluent to its symbolical meaning. The data under consideration shows that the house turns into a "family dwelling" step by- step. Every distinct stage from the choice of a dwelling area to the consecrating of the house is regulated by cast prescriptive etiquette originating in local specifics of mode of life and culture. This background contributes the opportunity to reveal and demonstrate the main typical features and characteristics of the local architectural tradition: principal building materials, types of constructions, floor plan, plan - composition, function of spaces, as well as the part taken by every person as a member of the family, kidred community or of the builders - craftsmen in creating and inhabiting, cultural mastering of the house. Therefore, in the process of its building and, accordingly - its function as a "family home", the traditional house in the area investigated can be regarded as an actual realisation of accumulated social experience of generations.
