Summary/Abstract: In this study, we consider the spiritual, cultural-confessional and identity motivations and challenges in Livre de prière (Prayer Book), recently published (2014) in French by the Apostolia review of The Romanian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Western and Southern Europe, archdiocese of the Romanian Orthodox Church, seated in France / Limours, near Paris. Our discussion will focus on the analysis of the paratextual apparatus of this translation (issued with the blessing and Foreword of His Eminence Joseph, Metropolitan of Western and Southern Europe, and Translator’s Notes), its sources (we will consider a discourse analysis of the intertextual approach concerning the insertion of a few French versions of the Psalms and a few other prayers, at the same time pondering on the purpose and motivation of this intertextuality), as well as on the target audience of this prayer book. In order to highlight the «Romanian» particularities of this editorial endeavor and its final product, we compare this book with other Orthodox books of prayer(s) written in French (published exclusively by monastic communities), and focus on the Romanian characteristics to be found in its content (choice of prayers), choice of book title (the word prayer in the singular, denotes an absence of confessional formulation) and the instructions of use.
