Summary/Abstract: On the basis of V. Bush’s report Science – the endless frontier the author first reconstructs content and philosophical presuppositions of the social contract for science, and then considers objections against it. Criticism shows that it cannot be an adequate model of the relationship between science and society. Three competing conceptions – a new social contract for science, subjecting science to common good, and cooperative assurance – share the conviction on the crucial role of science in creating good life, but they lack any embedding in a philosophical conception of human being and common good.
