Summary/Abstract: In the knowledge-based society, education and science play a key role. Also, the significance of theoretical knowledge in training specialists in various professions is increasing. Self-education in professional life is considered important. Such educational activity also applies to Preparation for Family Life teachers who are under the obligation to expand their knowledge and to develop their skills. Professional career of Preparation for Family Life teachers is directly linked to the need of increasing the efficiency of teaching and educating, as well as introducing pupils to lifelong learning. Diligent fulfilment of professional duties, which result from being a teacher and educator, requires an active commitment to one’s professional development through self-education. Self-education of a Preparation for Family Life teacher concerns mainly knowledge-related and methodological issues. It results not only from curricular requirements and expectations of institutions responsible for education (e.g. headmasters, education office, Ministry of Education) and the society, but also from the established system of values, teachers’ own interests and professional experience. In practice, Preparation for Family Life teachers decide themselves on the issues, methods and means of self-education. The school as their workplace supports them in making the choices by motivating them to creative activity and by setting requirements for professional development.
