Postmodern Nostalgia in a Multicultural Context

Summary/Abstract: Centered on some of the novels belonging to Kazuo Ishiguro, the paper aims at illustrating the multiple facets of nostalgia, as it functions in the postmodern world, at the crossroads of cultures and identities. The nostalgic mood of Ishiguro’s works sometimes acquires tragic accents in a world dominated by chaos and alienation. Nostalgia becomes a means of survival and Ishiguro’s heroes find in the nostalgic mood a way to regain their dignity and to achieve both catharsis and consolation.
