Summary/Abstract: Focussing on the latest novel written by one of New Zealand’s top writers, the paper approaches the issues of literary tradition in the context of the contemporary colonizer-colonized relationship. Set in Bougainville, a tropical island where the horror of the civil war lurks, the novel explores the manifold readings, fictional or not, engendered by the only book existing in the local tiny school, Charles Dickens’ masterpiece Great Expectations.
