Summary/Abstract: In the end of 1993 the Institute of Demography at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences carried out a research on the living conditions of the retired people. The problems of the aged population in the state are particularly actual. On one side, this is due to the constantly deepening process of population ageing which is typical for our demographic development and, on the other side, to the unenviable situation of this group of Bulgarian citizens, who have the greatest difficulties with the transition to a market economy. The article describes the purposes and the tasks of the research, as well as the object and the subject of study. The sources of information which were used are discussed. Special attention is paid to the methods of empirical sociological research. 1082 retired persons were surveyed, who live in independent pensioner households, distributed proportionally to the territory of the state. Through this research two basic tasks were solved — descriptive and factorial. Research on the factorial dependencies was done by making use of a statistical test. The force of the dependencies was measured by the Cramer coefficient. For the solution of the research tasks were elaborated single-dimensional distributions for all questions in the questionnaire and over 300 two-dimensional distributions with the basic socio-demographic characteristics of the surveyed persons. An important moment in this article is the assessment done on the stochastic precision of the results of the research, as well as a discussion on the representativeness of the data received.
