Summary/Abstract: In the history of Bulgarian culture Constantine Irechek is one of the best known and most respected foreign researchers in Slavic Studies. Among his many books on Bulgarian folk art, history and politics, the Bulgarian Diary is of special importance. It is a document written for private purpose only; it houses Irechek’s most intimate, direct and sincere observations on, and estimations of, the political and cultural life in Bulgaria during his visit in 1879 – 1884. Sofia through the eyes of Irechek is the focus of research in this study; the readers of present day come to know how the “sofiantsi” lived one hundred thirty five years ago.
