Summary/Abstract: The author reminds us of the little known outside of Asia film by Tian Zhuanhuang “Rock Kids” (1988). It was made in the period when the director made films to order, and did not consider them to be expressive of his opinions. The film depicts an interesting phenomenon in the field of Chinese subculture. Pop music of the 1980s China was divided into types: “tongsu yinyue”, which was supported by the government, and the underground rock music, the “yaogun yinyue”. They differed in every respect. The form particularly popular among the youth was the breakdance. Tian’s film presents the story of dancers practicing breakdance, and reveals the subversive character of the Chinese subculture.
