Summary/Abstract: The process of formation of surnames among the citizens of Kaunas was still far from its completion in the 17th and 18th centuries, as witnessed by the numerous variants recorded in the documents. Various factors contributed to this instability, notably the use of Polish and Latin in official documents, and the fact that little attention was paid to the accurate reproduction of surnames. 17th century variants of surnames are here classified into three groups: (1) orthographical and phonetic variants, (2) variants differing as to their endings, and (3) variants with different patronymical suffixes. The latter groups are referred to as morphological variants. In the article, most attention is paid to the first type. A similar instability, especially with regard to orthography and phonetics, is noted in 18th century documents.
