Summary/Abstract: One of the key determinants of the knowledge-based economy – which stems from its definition – is the constant increase of the role of knowledge in creating social and economic processes. In the knowledge-driven economy one can encounter establishing very strong relations between economy and science. On that ground also the technology plays the key role as a product factor. The article focuses on showing mechanisms enabling and supporting the knowledge and technology transfer between the academic and business worlds. That process is driven by active use of many instruments. Moreover, it contributes to the growth of the regions’ potential, where those actors are localized. Higher education institutions are places where specialized knowledge and innovation solutions are worked out. The latter can be successfully applied to the economy thanks to the cooperation between various economic partners. Additionally, companies can increase their comparative advantage due to developing partnerships with universities.
