Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to highlight Arend Lijphart’s theoretical contribution in the field of comparative study of multicultural societies. His works are fundamental for the theorizing of the membership to an ethnocultural group as a study object and for the analysis of the influence exerted by this sociodemographic variable on political opinions and attitudes. Lijphart’s comparative research helps indefining multicultural societies and understanding the role of subcultures and structural cleavages shaping voters’ and politicians’ behaviours, on one hand, and in the functioning in parties, institutions and democracy, on the other hand.
