Summary/Abstract: This article aims at examining two types of similarities and dissimilarities between Central-Eastern Europe and Western Europe – similarities and dissimilarities that scientific literature put forward as analysis grid for the ethnic phenomenon. Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and Spain are the main cases that we discuss within this article. For comparing them, several aspects are taken into consideration: the ethnogenesis or the formation process of ethnic minorities and of ethno-cultural identities; the evolution of the interethnic relations, of the relations between the “host” or “adoptive” State and the sub-national communities; the identity patterns and the ones of political representation today. The author’s leading conclusion is that the arguments one can generally use for constructing parallel monographs are not persuasive enough for sustaining a rigid separation between the two Europes.
