Summary/Abstract: The article discusses issues concerning interaction between communities activity and local economic development. The author proposes a thesis that the role of communities in building their own revenue base is too overrated. Commonly identified municipalities economy is therefore not the cause of local economic development and more the result of increased income resulting from geographical rent. To support the thesis the article presents an analysis of 100 municipalities with relatively high own incomes. To this elite group there are included only those municipalities whose own incomes are clearly developed by spatial factors.
